Magnesium Supplements Could Prevent Bone Fractures in Older People

A recent study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology indicates that magnesium supplements could help prevent bone fractures in middle-aged and older individuals. The study, led by Dr. Setor Kunutsor of the University of Bristol’s Musculoskeletal Research Unit, emphasizes the increasing role of magnesium in bone health. Every year in the United States, there are almost 6 million cases of bone fractures, and 75% of hip, spinal, and forearm fractures occur in people over the age of 65.

Calcium and vitamin D are well recognized for their ability to promote bone health, but magnesium is a crucial nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium and process vitamin D. A deficiency of magnesium has been shown to increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. It is important to maintain adequate magnesium levels to promote bone density, prevent osteoporosis, and promote overall bone health in older individuals.
